What Romania's power plants could deliver, from 2015 to today — rebuilt from Transelectrica's quarterly publications.
Transelectrica publishes the installed capacity of the national power system as a spreadsheet, roughly once a quarter, replacing the previous edition in place. There is no archive and no machine-readable feed, so the figures are widely quoted one at a time and almost never as a series.
What follows is eighty-five of those publications, collected and reconstructed into a single verified series. Every figure was checked against the cell it came from.
Why available capacity, and not installed power
Four quantities are published, and they answer different questions. Installed power counts the nameplate rating of every generator not yet written off, including plants mothballed for years. Available capacity subtracts what has been lost for good and leaves out mothballed units entirely: it is what the fleet could actually run.
Only the second is continuous across the whole period. In January 2020 the source replaced its physical measure of installed power with an administrative one, taken from the operating licence. Joined end to end, that series falls 3.4 GW in seventy-five days — a collapse that never happened on the ground. Available capacity crosses the same boundary at −2.2%, indistinguishable from its ordinary movement. The charts here mark the boundary rather than hide it.
Total photovoltaics
Licensed solar plants and prosumer installations are reported on separate sheets, with reference dates months apart, and are almost never added together. Taken together they are nearly equal — Romania's real photovoltaic capacity is roughly double either official figure alone.
